Once again the Elf fishing along the Marine Drive and Beachview areas this last week has been fantastic. Some really good catches were reported at the Blue Hole, mainly from 08h00 to 12h00. The fish were of good size in the 1-2kg region and caught mostly on Pilchard. Drift bait was the best but there were some fish caught on the bottom as well. There were some nice Leeries in the surf lines, especially in the Gamtoos surf region as the formation is looking really good at the moment. With the start of the Cracker season the fishermen are reporting some fine catches in the Bushy Park and Beachview areas. The fish are not big at the moment but they fishermen that are putting in the time are catching some fish in the 4-8kg class.
Grunter fishing in the Swartkops River, as usual, has been pretty good especially for the fishermen prepared to fish through the night. The local fishermen, with dropshotting being the flavour of the month, have really put a lot of effort lately into this sort of fishing and this is paying off for many of them. Quite a few of them have been catching a number of Leeries at various locations. Some of these fishermen have reported 14 - 15 Leeries caught on one outing. Fortunately 99% of the fishermen let these small fish go and this bodes well for the future. A number of Cob have also been caught on dropshot and with the winter setting in, more fish will be caught and we will begin to target them in the Sundays and Gamtoos on Rapalas.
If you want to catch a big fish (Cob) I would suggest you get your trolling tackle ready as I think its going to be a fantastic Cob season this year. Already some big fish have been reported in the Sundays and this is really early for the big fish. With last year being a fantastic trolling season, usually a good season follows a good season. It is the dream of many a young angler to catch a Cob in excess of 50 to 100 pounds. With the nice weather we are having at the moment I think it is a good opportunity to fish for Bonito and Yellowtail out at the Cape Recife point this weekend. I think some fine catches of Cracker will be reported in the coming weeks as the divers tell me there are big shoals swimming around the Thunderbolt Reef area.
