Article 7 - 1 June 2007

I'm back for the weekly report. I was back in Mozambique to fetch the boat.

Fishing in the Eastern Cape was a bit quiet during the bad weather of the past couple of weeks but with the good weather back the Swartkops in particular hotted up both with bait and artificials. After the rains the Grunter came on fast and furious and huge catches were taken both from the boat and from the side, my Dad and his fishing partner getting in on the action. Usually the fish bite better at night but always with the dirty water and an abundance of food after heavy rains, the daytime fishing worked just as well.

Dropshotting, being the craze in South Africa, most people are coming into the shop and asking about these little lures. On Monday and Tuesday the Leeries went crazy in the Swartkops with every drop shotter catching plenty of fish. Most of these were caught at Tippers Creek, Skulpies and Tiger Bay with the odd Cob and Elf in between as well. A pepper shad tail dropshot was the deadliest. Unfortunately the water turned cold on Tuesday afternoon and this put the fish down but this weekend is perfect as hot conditions are forecast and it is spring tide. I would fish Tippers Creek on the beginning of the push as well as Tiger Bay. The nice thing about winter is that the yellowtail come back in numbers to Port Elizabeth. There have been some beautiful fish, both speared and caught. Thunderbolt Reef has been very good and also out to sea on the 20 to 25m mark directly off Thunderbolt Reef has been very good as well. Plugs and spoons worked well for fish on the surface and halcos for the fish on the 20 to 25m mark.

Huge catches of Elf have been made the whole week with the early morning at the Blue Hole being the best. Elf catches have been on the increase over the last couple of years and it seems that the conservation work has paid off as these fish are in huge numbers. As it is spring tide and this being the best tide in general to catch fish, I would suggest that for river fishing you grab a couple of dropshots and go and catch a couple of Leeries. If you would like a fish to eat, buy a box of Pilchards and go and fish the Marine Drive for Elf.

A lovely weekend is forecast so enjoy the fishing and tight lines
