Its good to be back and here is the latest. Firstly, the fishing has been excellent around the Swartkops area with lovely Leeries coming out from the mouth, Modderspruit, Skulpies and the Rod Club. Most of these fish are coming out on drop shot and are in the 1-4kg class. May is an excellent time for Leeries and I recommend people to fish hard in May and June as the bigger fish leave our shores in July to move up the coast from Transkei to Durban. The Elf are still running and it has been a fantastic season with excellent catches along the Marine Drive on pilchard and spoon.
My brother and I have just been on holiday for 3 weeks in Mozambique. We stayed at a place called Casa Rei which has an estuary and excellent rock and surf as well as deep sea fishing. THis was truly a fantastic fishing holiday as we had good fishing every day. Spinning off the boat just outside of the river mouth was magnificent for Queen Mackerel and King Mackerel. All of these fish ranged in the 2-8kg class and in the first couple of days we must have caught a hundred fish. We fished in the river most afternoons and caught many Snapper, Kingfish and Sea Pike, all of these fish being caught on slims and dropshot. The Red Snapper gave us a really hard time with us landing 1 in every 5. They simply hit and run back into their cave. We landed mostly small ones with a fish of about 2kg being our biggest one. Lando had one on in about the 6-8kg class but smashed him up on its second run. We caught some lovely Estuary Cod at the clay banks with 1 or 2 of them breaking us up because they love to go back into their caves.
The Green Spot Kingies were in good numbers and we landed them in the range of sizes from 500g to 6kg. These are excellent fighting fish and we caught them mostly on a pearl shad dropshot. The last couple of days we fished at the point of Pomene and I had possibly the best fishing of my life for Queen Mackerel and King Mackerel. There were 4 of us on the boat and we would troll to find the fish, then spin with slims. Most times we had double, triple or quadruple hook-ups. The nice thing was that most of these were between the 6 and 10kg range and all of them were caught on 4kg tackle. Lando and I hooked into some huge Queenfish with me landing a 15kg Queenie on slim and Lando losing a 18-20kg fish at the boat. With the fish being so thick we decided to go to fly and had the same results as with the spinning.
Other fish that were thick were the Bonito in the 4-8kg class and Pick Handle Barracuda. On the last day, fishing at the clay banks, we caught a couple of Kingies and then I hooked into a lovely Pick Handle of 10-12 kgs. I fought it for a while with it jumping out the water a couple of times and then it bit me off next to the boat. I recommend that even fishing in the river you use Piano wire on all your lures as most of the fish in Mozambique have sharp teeth.
This was a fantastic trip besides the fines and bribes that we were subjected to. Still, this is one of the best fishing areas that South African's can fish.
