This week's fishing column will be in 3 sections which will make it easier to decide where to fish this weekend. This week the fishing has been spectacular as it always is in April.
ROCK & SURF
From the Marine Drive to Beachview, the catches of Elf have been spectacular on Pilchard and Spoon. The Elf at Bluehole, Wreck and Steps are in the 1-1.5kg range but a monster of 7kg was caught at the Bluehole. At Beachview there are also some Elf of the same shoal size but many more big fish have been landed in the 3-4kg range with a beauty of 6.2kg caught on Mackerel. For big Elf a cat Mackerel or fillet of Shad or Mullet is excellent.
The Sundays Surf has seen big catches of Leerie in the 3-9kg range, caught mainly on live Mullett. Leeries are fantastic fighters and very easy to target with live bait especially at river mouths, piers and harbour walls. A huge Cob of 45kg was caught near the mouth of Sundays on Chokka.
DEEP SEA
The Bonito are still as thick as ever out at sea, most of the fish being caught at the Point and Rye banks. Most of the Bonito are in the 2.5kg range, but 2 fish of note were a fish of 7kg caught on a Halco 12cm. A monster of 8kg was caught on a Strike-Pro. This fish is a hard fighter on the right tackle and if you want to catch fish on lure and have a deepsea boat, this is the fish to target this Easter. The Yellowtail have been scarce on the point but pretty thick at the banks. Most of the fish have been caught on a Pilchard / Chokka mix. They are quality fish in the 4-12kg range. This is an excellent eating fish and really tests the Angler's skill as he is a dirty fighter and therefore sought after by fishermen.
With drop shots and plain leadheads, many fish were caught on the bottom and with the water clearing up, many Leeries were caught at the harbour point on white leadheads. If the weather is good, this is where I would fish but fortunately I will be on the Gamtoos River this Easter.
SPINNING
The Sundays River is full of little Leeries, and we target these gutsy fish on leadheads, slimpsoons and plugs. The Cob have been quiet but will pick up in the winter months which is just around the corner. The Swartkops, as always, is teeming with small Leeries with most of the fish being caught upriver. The swimming prawn are back in good numbers in all our close rivers and this bodes well for the easter weekend. Still, if you want to catch fish on lures, the river mouths and harbour walls will be best. This is the best time of the year to catch Leeries and they stay thick until early to late June.
Tight lines and remember, the more you fish the luckier you get.
