This week's report is a really easy one to do as there has been particularly good fishing in the Eastern Cape this week, from Rock & Surf , Deep Sea, river fishing and particularly drop shotting. To start with there has been an Elf run of note on the Marine Drive. There have been huge numbers of Elf caught over the whole week with most of the fish being of a good size. Many of the fish have been in excess of 3kgs with the biggest being a 4.5kg fish. These are quality fish and are mostly being caught on Pilchard. With so much emphasis being put on drop shotting in the media, we as tackle shop owners obviously put a lot of effort into drop shot fishing and this last week was no exception. From the side - on Saturday we caught Grunter, Blacktail and a beautiful Steenbras on Berkeley Sandworm. These were all caught on light tackle and this is fantastic fun which anyone can do with a little coffee grinder and 6 foot 6 rod.
On Tuesday morning we got up early and decided to fish the shallow reefs off the islands and the results were spectacular! Everything was in our favour as the weather was beautiful and the sea was running fantastically. On the first reef we fished we managed to catch Elf, Yellow Bellies, Cob and Basterman (Redfish) on just about every cast - all caught on leadheads. We fished a further 3 reefs and got similar results and then managed a beautiful Dageraad of about 2.5kg on a Berkley drop shot. This is the first one we have caught on drop shot and we rarely catch them on bait so we were obviously excited about this catch. All in all we must have landed between 30 and 35 fish, all in the 1 - 2.5kg bracket.
We then went to fish a wreck off the harbour wall in Port Elizabeth. The Cob were extremely thick in the 500g to 1.5kg range, with us catching one nearly every cast. The East wind then chased us off the sea, but we had a fantastic morning's fishing and I can really recommend that anyone with a small or big deep-sea craft should try drop shotting. All these fish were caught on 4kg line and this makes it fantastic fun even if the fish are small. Its a great way to get the kids into fishing.
My Dad and his fishing partner caught plenty of small grunter in the 500g to 1.5kg range on Tuesday night at Swartkops River and in the afternoon they had plenty of fun fishing for little Leeries. The Leeries seem to be thick at the moment at Swartkops, mainly at the Brickfields, Modderspruit and Skulpies, mostly on leadheads, surface lures and slimspoons.
The Marine Drive is a must for the bait fisherman, especially if you are in the mood for some fresh Elf for dinner.
