Huge seas dominated the thoughts of fishermen this week making rock and surf and deep sea fishing all but impossible. Although before the big swell hit there were fantastic catches of elf from Hogan Park right up to Beach View. Us usual, the blue hole being the best, with lots of fish being caught on spoon and pilchards. The biggest Elf was a beauty of 4kgs. My brother Lando caught some really nice Cob in the 3-4kg range, all caught with the reliable slimspoon with him also getting some sizeable Elf in the Cape Recife area. These were all caught before the big swell hit. Huge swells then pounded the Port Elizabeth coast from Monday afternoon with this coinciding with the equinox tides, making shore and deep sea nearly impossible to fish. This is not necessarily a bad thing with sand banks being washed away and others being created. So with the swell subsiding, fishermen that can read the water and find the sandbanks and holes can expect good catches this weekend. However with big seas the rivers are always a good bet to try and this was no exception with good catches of Grunter being reported in the Swartkops river on prawn and pilchards.
Small Leeries were plentiful in all the surrounding rivers of Port Elizabeth, i.e, Sundays River, Swartkops and Gamtoos. At Gamtoos the old mouth has been working really well for Leeries and Cob caught on leadheads and slimspoons.
With the seas subsiding, spinning in the surf lines should be excellent. The Marine Drive will definitely work well for Elf with spoon and pilchard. With neap tide coming on fly fishing and spinning should be best near the river mouths as there will still be water movement in these areas.
Remember, the more you fish the luckier you get!
