It seems like we are hitting the windy season at the moment and there is quite a bit of rain around as well. Most of the really keen anglers are still fishing and there were some fine catches of Grunter in the Swartkops river. Talking to my Dad about the current run of Grunter in the Swartkops, he reckons it is one of the best he can remember and this is really fantastic as there are so many more fishermen now and the fish are still plentiful.
On Friday night the fish really came out thick and most of the fish were caught on Pilchards. This seems like one of the baits that is working very well for Grunter nowadays. If we had been told 20 years ago to use Pilchards as bait for Grunter, we would have laughed it off as a joke. The Swartkops seems to be working well these days for Cob as well in the 1-7kg bracket with plenty of these fish being taken on leadheads.
There were some nice Leeries caught at the far point at St Francis on Predator plugs and we are just hoping that the yellowtail make an appearance soon at the far point as well because there are many good fish at the rye banks at the moment. Unfortunately the weather has been bad for deep sea fishing and when there is a good day it is usually during the week - this counts out most fishermen.
As the weather starts to warm up the summer fish start to feed better and interestingly enough, after the east winds we have been having, the Hotties have started to bite nicely at Cape Recife. In my opinion, as soon as the weather calms down we are going to have some really good fishing for game fish, especially in the surf. This is the time that we start catching large numbers of Leeries and the surf fish are always a decent size. The easiest place to fine Leeries is in river mouths or close to river mouths. To find these fish you can either put out a live bait and leave it in a holder, then grab a small spinning rod and walk the surf throwing surface plugs. The Leeries are suckers for a surface plug and this is some of the most exciting fishing you can experience
Remember that the Elf season is closed now until the 1st of December.
