Fishing has been unbelievable over the past few weeks with huge catches of Grunter in the Swartkops. The size of the fish coming out is unbelievable with most of the fish being between 2 and 4.5kg, plenty of fish also being caught weighing between 6 and 7.4kg. My Dad caught a 7.4kg fish and that same night, 2 fish of 7kf also came out.
The Grunter are still thick so next week could be good fishing for Grunter with spring tides coming on. Staying with the Swartkops, the leadhead fishing has picked up significantly with plenty of Cob and Leervis being caught. My brother and I had a memorable morning's fishing on Tuesday, catching 10 Cob on leadheads, deep water jigging and then moving to Steenbrasspruit and catching a further 10 Leeries. All of these fish were released. One of the Cob, when we got it to the surface, was nearly eaten by another Cob of about 25kg but unfortunately the hook could not be set.
The Leeries are thick in the surf and river mouths at the moment with the livebait fishermen catching some good size fish. We are expecting a bumper of a Leerie season with the big fish already here and they usually stay until April / May of the following year.
All in all, fishing is excellent and we think the stricter conservation measures that have been brought in over the last couple of years are starting to bear fruit.
If you are planning on fishing the Gamtoos in the next few days, don't because the Gam 1000 is on and the river is full to capacity with boats.
