The weather this last week was atrocious but fortunately for the fishermen that braved the weather, they had fantastic results. The Cob and Grunter from Sign and Nameplate to the New Brighton pier bit fantastically with 3 huge Cob being caught at Smelly Creek and lots of gunter being caught as well. Sign and Nameplate was full of small Cob and good size Grunter, mostly caught on Pilchards.
Many customers were buying bait at 5pm and fishing into the night, catching some beautiful fish.
There was a fantastic Elf run on Monday at the wreck (Marine Drive) but unfortunately the sea turned foul the next day. Fortunately with the good weather we are having, the sea should calm down and the Elf should be on the bite this weekend. The sea was too rough to fish deep sea this week but is calming down so I expect some nice catches of Geelbek and Reds this weekend. One notable catch this week was a 7.7kg Dagaraad caught on the shallow reefs near Sundays River as well as a 7.2kg Grunter caught at Swartkops. A 45kg Cob was caught on a Rapala at Swartkops of all places, at 10am on Saturday morning. With this being the Cob season this is not as unusual as it sounds.
Sunday's weather is predicted to be perfect so hopefully fishermen can get some good fishing in as spring tide is nearing and this is the best tide to catch fish in the river and sea.
