At last the Cob season has begun in earnest. We have had some good early season leadhead fishing for Cob in the Gamtoos for fish between 2 and 10kg. We were hoping for the big fish to come into the river and fortunately they didn't disappoint us. There has been some fantastic Cob fishing in the surf with Abalucas and weighted Rapalas in the last couple of weeks and many of these fish have now moved into the river.
This last weekend some beautiful fish were caught in the Gamtoos in the 15 to 30kg region and one fantastic fish of 45kg was landed. All these fish came out on shad wraps, barra mags and magnum Rapalas. All of these are floating lures and only go beneath the surface once they are pulled. My brother and I got some decent fish on Monday and also missed a couple. This Cob season usually lasts 2-3 months so its quite important that you get into the action soon. If you want to catch a big fish this is the time of the year to do it. Please remember, though, that this is our breding stock so let these fish go where possible. The Swartkops has been producing really good catches of Leeries on surface lures and leadheads and these fish have been of a better size nearing the end of winter. The Grunter fishing has been excellent this winter and still remains very good. The Marine Drive has produced good Elf catches and the cracker season has now begun in earnest with some good fish being caught in the flatrocks area.
The fishing in general has been really good in the last couple of weeks and the exciting thing is that the big Cob have arrived in the rivers as well as the better sized Leeries. The Cracker are starting to bite in really good numbers as well and this is really what winter fishing is about - catching big fish.
